is it reasonable for my mom to not like me (21F) hanging out with the guy i’m seeing (24M) outside our house?
i’ve been going out with this guy for just over a month and i like him a lot! he drives me home from campus almost every day (i’ve insisted that he shouldn’t because i think i’m pretty out of the way for him, but he doesn’t care cuz it means he gets to spend more time w me lol) and i’ve really appreciated this because it means i don’t have to come home as late on public transit and have my parents pick me up from the station. i thought my parents would be relieved by this, and they were at first! until we started making it a habit to hang out in his car before i come inside my house.
we both really enjoy each other’s time, and him driving me home is really the only time we get one-on-one time together because i don’t really see him on campus a lot! we’re both pretty shy so we haven’t really gotten comfortable with any physical touch. all we’re ever really doing in his car is just talking and listening to music together! my mom has been getting really mad at me for hanging out in his car before i come inside though. she thinks it’s uncouth and that it “looks bad” :/ we’re not official yet, but she insists that if we wanna keep talking, we should just bring it inside. obviously that makes us both pretty uncomfortable 😭 i don’t want him meeting my family yet, we’re not there yet! it’s weird to me.
this is my first time in an almost* serious relationship, which may explain my mom’s reaction, but i kind of feel like it’s a bit much. the latest we get home is usually past 8 or 9, and the latest i come in is 10 or at MOST 11. my mom hates it. is that too late? she keeps saying it’s my fault that she has to sleep later because she’s always waiting for me to come home, and that even if i text her i’m outside, she refuses to consider me “home” until i’m actually inside. i don’t really understand what’s wrong with me hanging out with him in his car if i’m safely outside my home.
i almost feel rushed to make the relationship more serious so that i can feel comfortable coming inside with him, but i really don’t want to rush things and neither does he 😭 my parents both keep making me feel like a terrible person for just wanting to talk to him a bit longer. and they don’t seem to trust that im not “doing anything” with him. it makes me feel so frustrated, cuz how am i supposed to “prove” that i haven’t even kissed him?! they think im lying about my relationship with him even though i don’t think i’ve given them any reason to distrust me? i’m at a loss here.
