Individualism

Discussion

Just rambling as I sit on the toilet at work pondering.

Modern culture/capitalism seems to have perpetuated individualism as the key to success.

Hustle culture, workplaces that don’t care about workers, what feels like a lonliness epidemic, people feeling like they always have to be grinding towards the next goal. People struggling to put down roots because of housing.

Our modern world has forced us to move away from communities and family and to instead focus on personal survival. Social media fuels the sense of people feeling like they are missing out. People are splintered from their families, less and less people seem to give back to local communities, not because they dont want to, but because we are all in survival mode. People moving overseas for work, leaving their friends and family behind.

Growing up here, I saw a great sense of community, people chipping in, knew our neighbours, family close by.

Now it feels like so many people are struggling to survive we barely greet eachother.

I know this is a global issue. Fuelled by technology and capitalism.

I currently have a young child and wish desperately that things were different.

Am I looking for a utopia that doesn’t exist? Is this what life is like living in a city, would I find this in more rural smaller towns?

Do I just need to touch grass?
