She is leaving me after eight years because I betrayed her.
Hi everyone,
I’ve been reading a lot here these past weeks but now I feel completely lost and I really need outside perspective.
I (27M) was in a relationship for 8 years with my girlfriend (27F). She has always been loyal, loving, committed, and someone I could fully rely on. I’ve always seen her as the woman I would build a family with someday.
Three months ago, she found ambiguous messages between me and another girl. Nothing happened physically, but the messages were inappropriate and broke her trust. She confronted me, we had a big fight, and after a week things “calmed down,” but clearly something inside her changed.
During the following three months, she told me later that she was deeply hurt, felt unsupported by me, felt like I didn’t take what happened seriously enough, and that I had become distant. She tried to move forward but couldn’t. Meanwhile, I didn’t understand the depth of her pain and didn’t realize how much she was struggling.
Two weeks ago, she found more messages (not ambiguous this time), but still enough to bring everything back up emotionally for her. She told me she wasn’t sure she was still in love enough to get past what happened. She said she needed distance and that she wasn’t sure if she wanted to stay in this relationship.
This hit me hard. I finally had my wake-up call — I took responsibility, I apologized sincerely, I acknowledged that I minimized things, and I started working on myself. I tried to show her that I understood the damage and wanted to rebuild things with real effort.
But she told me something that felt like a breaking point: “I feel like for months I lived for us while you lived for yourself.”
We had a deeper conversation. She said she felt lost, that she still had love for me, that she sees me as someone she could have children with someday, but she doesn’t know if she can continue the relationship after the emotional pain of these past 3 months. She also said she felt the need to “find herself alone” and prove to herself she can exist outside the couple.
She also mentioned that she sometimes enjoys the feeling of being flirted with by others lately (nothing physical happened according to her), which confused me even more.
Yesterday, she asked to meet and finally told me clearly: “It’s over. I think this is the right decision.”
She said my efforts these past 3 weeks came “too late,” and that what she needed during those months was emotional support, reassurance, affection — but I was closed off and distant because I naïvely believed that giving her “space” was what she needed.
I didn’t beg, I didn’t chase. I explained what I had learned and understood, but I respected her decision. I left the apartment this morning to start a “break” and give her space, but honestly, I feel destroyed.
Some important details:
• She said she still finds me attractive but that I both “attract and irritate” her now. • She cried during parts of our talk, so I know she’s not indifferent. • I heard her talking with a colleague on the phone last week (a guy) — nothing explicit, but they seem a bit close. • I don’t think she cheated, but the emotional distance scares me. • I suggested couples therapy early on; she didn’t want it. • She said she “doesn’t want to change me,” but doesn’t think I’m what she needs anymore emotionally. • She is my first partner and she is scared about that • She said she didn’t want to force something she feels has been “broken for months.”
I’m torn between:
- Fighting for her with a real emotional gesture (a letter, a vulnerable conversation, telling her exactly how I feel). or
- Completely disappearing, letting the breakup settle, and rebuilding myself for real — even if it means losing her forever.
My heart says fight. My brain says give space. My fear says she has already emotionally detached, and nothing will change her mind. But another part of me wonders if she’s confused and hoping I’ll show something real.
I don’t know what to do anymore.
Should I make one last emotional attempt? Or accept that it’s truly over and walk away? Is there realistically a chance after everything that happened, or am I lying to myself?
Any advice would mean a lot.
