We started as a tiny Reddit thread for bi women, started having Meetups, and now grew too big for the group chat, and launched our own community site!

EXPERIENCE

I wanted to share a little "Bi Joy" with you all because I totally get how isolating it can feel to be bi, especially when you're trying to find community in real life. I recently move to California from the upper Midwest, where I sometimes felt like the only bi woman on earth. It's was lonely and not great for my mental health.

A while back, a few of us in San Diego decided to post on Reddit, looking for other local bi women to hang out with. We didn't expect much—maybe a coffee date or two. But the response was honestly amazing (in the best way). Don't get me wrong - there's a huge LGBTQ+ community in our city, but not all spaces feel totally bi-friendly. To find bi sisters was HUGE!

And we quickly discovered there were so many other queer women wanting the same thing: a safe and friendly space to connect with people who just get it. We grew so quickly that we literally broke our group chats. Managing meetups and keeping track of new members became a challenge. So we took the plunge and built our own free community hub: sdbigirls.com.

I’m sharing this for to inspire and connect. If you’re out there wishing for a bi community in your area, go ahead and start one! Post a thread! There are definitely people waiting for someone to step up. Even if you only get a group chat going, it will be a chat with YOUR people. On our site we added a lot of Q&A, FAQ type content to help others who are just starting their journey. Resources like r/bisexual are ABSOLUTELY A LIFESAVER!

For any locals in San Diego who haven’t found us yet, we now have a home base to plan coffee meetup, hikes, and nights out with our new squad.

It makes me so happy to see our little online thread turn into real friendships. There’s community out there! 🩷💜💙
