Extreme guilt-broken leg

My 10 month old cat severely broke his leg last night. It was a complete freak accident as he was jumping from the table and slipped and lost his balance. We took him to the ER and had exam, sedation, X-rays done ($900). Due to the severity of the break, the doctor said he will need surgery which would be between 3-4k on the low end. Unfortunately, we are just not in a financial position to be able to take on that debt. We spoke with the doctor about options and one of the very kind technicians ended up taking ownership of him and will pursue surgery for him. My heart is broken that we couldn’t give him what he needed and I feel like we failed him. My heart feels empty without him. If we ever get a pet again, we will 100% be getting pet insurance.
