HND to ORD Checked Luggage Question

First time doing this kind of itinerary. Flying back from a trip ITM - HND - ORD - CLT, flying JAL for the first two flights and American for the last leg (all travel was booked through American).

My question is about checked luggage in ORD. After clearing customs, my understanding is I retrieve our bags but then can rebook them at the American kiosk within customs? It is a separate airline but all booked through American, so wondering whether we can recheck at the desk in the customs area or if we have to leave, go to then American counter to recheck, and then go back through security to catch our connection.

I have never been to ORD before, so really appreciate the help!
