New Apartment Anxiety

WWYD? Vent/Rant

For context, last week I moved out of my apartment I lived in for 5 years. I was at the very top floor. Everything was fine until a new person moved in underneath me. Immediately after she moved in, she began beating on her ceiling(my floor) non stop and even followed me room to room. She would turn her music and/or tv up to the max volume, etc. After this began I did reflect and wonder if I really was being loud without realizing it, so I started trying to walk softer, close cabinets and drawers quietly, keep tv volume very low. I even tried to have a polite conversation with her, but she was very rude and off putting. Even after my changes, her behavior did not change. Ironically she was 100x louder than me, she had 2 small children that constantly ran and stomped around, would drop and knock over things, she was constantly screaming, yelling, cursing at them, she would slam doors as hard as she could etc. and I never once complained about that noise. Prior to this I’ve never had any issues with my downstairs neighbors and always had a good rep-ore with them. I made numerous complaints to the property manager along with video evidence and had to call the police on her numerous times for her beating on the ceilings and walls. They would issue her the complaints, but there was no consequences so she kept doing it. This went on for 2 months. Long story short I had to get an attorney to break my lease and found another apartment nearby.

I decided to get a first floor unit so I didn’t have to worry about living above someone again. I just moved in and wow I cannot believe how thin the walls are! I clearly hear the neighbors on both sides of me, like so clear it sounds like they are in the room with me lol. The woman above me is heavier and her footsteps sound like earth quakes. Honestly, I can live with the noise. My anxiety and paranoia are mostly about ME being heard. I know if I can hear them, they can hear me and now I’m sooo paranoid I might disturb someone.

I am not a loud person, I don’t play music or have guests over. But I get up early for work and I’m paranoid about even taking a shower or pulling out my dresser drawers. I’m paranoid to do the dishes or cook dinner because you can literally hear almost everything. From what I can hear it sounds like all the neighbors are just going about their business without a care in the world, they talk at normal volume and laugh really loud, etc. But now I’ve got it in my head that everytime I hear my neighbor walking upstairs that she is retaliating because she can hear me.

Am I just being paranoid due the last issue with neighbor? Has anyone else ever felt this way and how did you overcome it?? Thanks in advance!
