LDS Mission and Attending US Air Force Academy - What’s the timeline/best route to take?

Hey everyone,
I’m a high school student trying to figure out my future, and I’m hoping someone here has experience with this. I want to apply to the Air Force Academy after I graduate, but I also plan on serving a 2-year LDS mission. I’m trying to understand how the timing usually works and what options people in similar situations have taken.

I’ve heard mixed things — some say you can get an appointment, then leave for a year and come back, others say you have to reapply, and some say the Academy doesn’t really allow deferrals for full 2-year missions. I just want to know what’s realistic so I can plan ahead.

If anyone has gone through this (or knows someone who has), what was your timeline? Did you apply before your mission, after your mission, or try for a deferment? And is there anything I should start doing now to keep all my options open?

Thanks in advance — any advice or info helps!
