Finally greened after SO MANY hiccups 😭✅
After a long, stressful journey full of confusion and anxiety, I finally got my green card approved. Posting my timeline and experience in case it helps someone else who’s stuck like I was.
Timeline:
- I-130 filed: Nov 2023
- I-485 filed: Aug 2024 (filed separately because my wife was an LPR at that time)
- Interview: Dec 1, 2025
- Approved: Dec 2, 2025 ✅
My I-130 was approved in June 2025, but here’s where things got scary — it was sent to NVC because Boundless mistakenly selected consular processing, even though I clearly told them I was doing AOS in the U.S. 😓
That mistake completely freaked me out. I seriously thought I’d have to leave the U.S. and do consular processing from back home, even though I already had an I-485 pending. I called USCIS and the Department of State multiple times, and honestly, neither gave me a clear answer. Huge shoutout to some amazing Redditors who reassured me that I did NOT need to do anything and just had to wait for my AOS interview. You guys saved my sanity.
Interview Day – Dec 1, 2025
The officer was actually very chill — but 90% of the questions were directed at my wife, which she did NOT expect at all 😂 She was so nervous and later got mad at me because she felt put on the spot nonstop.
The officer asked for:
- Our IDs
- My birth certificate
- Marriage certificate
- We also showed some recent printed photos
She asked:
- If both of us are from the same country (yes)
- Why I’m not working despite having a Master’s degree
I wanted my wife to mention that my OPT expired and I don’t have a work permit, but instead she told the officer:
Then the officer asked:
- How we survive in NYC with just her working part-time → We explained savings + my legal work during CPT/OPT
- Then came the rent agreement issue: We don’t have a formal lease because our landlord is also from the same country, and honestly, in the South Asian community in NYC, that’s pretty common. We brought a letter from the landlord, but the officer said it wasn’t enough because there was no landlord ID attached. She kind of scolded my wife and said:
That part was stressful 😬
Then she asked my wife:
- How we met
- How we decided to get married
- What visa was I on
- My degree
- Where we traveled together in the U.S.
We submitted:
- Joint bank statements
- NY insurance
- Utility bills
- Recent joint tax return
Then she turned to me:
- My wife’s employer name
- How many days she works
- Which school I went to
- Why I moved to NYC from the Midwest
- What I did back home after my Bachelor’s → I explained I ran a small travel company, the services we offered, etc.
- Whether I own property in the home country
- A bunch of yes/no background questions
The Scariest Moment
She asked if I had EVER worked without authorization.
I was fully prepared for the worst and told the truth — yes.
She barely reacted and said:
She had me sign the form, and said:
At that exact moment, I felt like it was already approved.
Approval
The very next day, I got the approval text message on Dec 2, 2025 😭✅
After months of stress, confusion, and sleepless nights, it was finally over.
If anyone is dealing with interview anxiety…
DON’T PANIC. Be honest and prepared.
Reddit truly carried me through the worst part of this journey.
If anyone has questions, feel free to ask. I’m happy to help the way others helped me ❤️🇺🇸
