Why didn't the Warriors trade for Giannis in summer 2023?
The Warriors knew another title with the same core was very unlikely. Although they had done so in 2022, it took a more favorable set of circumstances than most teams have to win it all, and they were older at that point.
Steph Curry is as important to the franchise as pretty much any player has been to any franchise. On the level of MJ to Chicago, LeBron to Cleveland, and Kobe to LA. And given that, while he's still an elite player, they should have probably wanted to maximize that.
They should have sold the farm to get Giannis. Give up some of Poole, Kuminga, Moody, Wiggins, and all the draft picks necessary to get him. It would have been a very attractive offer for the Bucks after they just lost to the Heat in the 1st round.
Milwaukee ended up getting Lillard in lieu of their embarrassing playoff loss, but a huge offer from the Warriors where they give up everything except for their older core would have also been very attractive. Milwaukee could rebuild instead, and it wouldn't have been that bad for them as they had already won a title with Giannis.
Now, the Bucks may lose Giannis anyway with absolutely no future, and the Warriors still have a decent amount of young assets and draft picks with little to show for it. It's probably too late for them to win another title with Steph at this point. They are not that good right now, and he is older and in decline.
They could have gotten rid of all the young assets for another strong shot at title #5. Who cares if their future would be bleak in 2027? The glory days of extending the dynasty are way, way, more important than the difference of being a 13th seed versus a 5th seed in the following years, the latter of which is what the Warriors have chosen.
