Hit & Run. Got license plate but police say can’t locate

Hi everyone, I was in a minor car accident on 10/28/25. The guy and I pulled over. He checked the damage on his car and I checked the damage on my car. He kind of brushed past the damage on my car and said it was just a scratch, got his car, and left. Police came. I had a picture of the license plate so they ran it, but said they couldn’t find it. I went on the Secretary of State website and found that it was a valid tag, but it doesn’t have any ownership identifying information. I’m curious if I should call the police and ask them to run it again using the VIN number that I found on the Secretary of State’s website or if I should contact my insurance company to investigate, but I don’t want my premium to go up. Any thoughts? Thanks!
