Naturalization interview passed - NYC Javits Federal Building (Brooklyn FO)
Hi! Just passed the interview today (yay!) and wanted to share my experiences with you all :)
Prior to the interview
- My appt was at 2:20p. I arrived at 1:30p at the USCIS-Public Entrance gate (no line) and was told to come back at 1:50p. no biggie.
- The security screening was airport- style, dress shoes off (sneakers stay on).
- So many elevators! No one was standing around to guide you, so be sure to pick the one that actually goes to your floor (mine was the 8th).
- Once on 8th floor, first let the security checks the interview notice, then went to the front to check-in & get my ticket# (was asked to show the notice and my green card).
- The numbers were called not in sequence and that really threw me off. I think it's because they are by different application types? Anyway, I waited ~30 min after my appt time to be called. The waiting area was really empty and SO SILENT!
Interview
- My officer came to the waiting area to get me. First, he made a copy of my green card, passport and my driver's license. Then, I was led to his office through a bunch of cubicles.
- After the swear-in, he started the tests- civic questions, reading then writing. He then proceeded to verified my travel history and commented on how often I travel. He started counting the days I was out of the country to make sure I was physically inside the US long enough (that couple of minutes of him just doing calculations felt like FOREVER). After he ok-ed that he just verified my spouse's info (I have a marriage-based green card). Bunch of Yes/No questions- be sure to listen closely to these questions.
- My officer didn't ask for any additional documents. I have my marriage certificate, my spouse's birth certificate, and the tax transcripts (per another redditor's recommendation).
- At the end I was handed in the paper saying I've passed! My officer was friendly and gave me a handshake (even though I really wanted a high-five!)
- My status was changed right away to "oath ceremony will be scheduled."
Test questions
- Read: Who can vote?
- Write: Citizens can vote
-
- What is the supreme law of the land?
-
- What is the economic system in the United States?
-
- Under our Constitution, some powers belong to the federal government. What is one power of the federal government?
-
- Who did the United States fight in World War II?
-
- When did we celebrate Independence Day?
-
- Name two national US holidays
Final thoughts
Everyone was friendly from the gate check, security to the officers, which made the whole nerve-wrecking experience so much better. Just be sure you take some deep breaths and don't rush your answers! My officer had slight accent and I had to ask him to repeat himself couple of times. As long as you know your application well (especially travel history) and studied the civic questions, you will be ready! Good luck everyone!
