Why I ended up loving Austria (specifically Western Austria) more than I expected

I'm an American and have been lucky enough to spend time in the Alps in Switzerland, Germany, Italy, and Austria – and honestly? Austria has become my favorite country.

Western Austria somehow connected with me more than any other Alpine region:

It has the beauty of the Swiss Alps... without the elitism. I was in Switzerland, and while it is breathtaking, it sometimes feels like an exclusive showroom for billionaires, oligarchs, and discreet private clients.

But Austria? It was just as impressive, but it felt authentic and not staged. Even in the more upscale places like Kitzbühel or Seefeld, I didn't feel out of place. Of course, there is wealth, but it does not dominate the atmosphere. You see families, skiers, hikers, retirees, farmers, students – and they all fit together perfectly.

  1. It is incredibly warm and human. I can't emphasize it enough: The people made the difference.

In Tyrol and in Salzburg, I met:

Farmers who smiled at us and joked with us; Locals who were genuinely curious about where we came from; waiters and bartenders who were straightforward but friendly; Families who welcomed us with open arms. Mountain huts felt like an extension of the living room.

It felt connected. Less formal, less reserved, less businesslike than in Switzerland.

It simply has this mix of Central European order, Italian zest for life, and Alpine warmth.

  1. It creates the perfect balance between outdoor activities and everyday life.

I only truly learned to appreciate that when I left, because I come from Atlanta in the southeastern USA, which is beautiful in its own way, but can never compare to Europe.

Austria is one of the few places where:

Skiing for me as a skier is normal and not glamorous; Hiking trails start right in the village and are not kilometers away; lakes are there for swimming and not just admired from afar; Mountains are part of everyday life and not just a tourist attraction.

Innsbruck particularly impressed me. It felt like Boulder, Colorado, or Asheville, North Carolina in the States but right in the Alps, but with:

comparatively better food; better infrastructure; more history; more culture; a very special atmosphere. It is a university town amidst breathtaking nature. The perfect balance.

  1. It is expensive, but it never comes across as ostentatious.

It's definitely not cheap, but by no means as bad as I expected.
I feel like you're paying for quality here, not for brands. Compared to Switzerland, where I would rather burn my wallet for a coffee, Austria seemed... strangely reasonable.

  1. It is a place where I can honestly imagine living, not just visiting.

This is the most important point for me.

Some Alpine places are indeed incredibly beautiful to look at, but you can only live there if you are a millionaire.

But if I had a job working from home, I would honestly love to rent a small apartment in Innsbruck or St. Johann im Pongau, go hiking, play golf, and ski on the weekends, learn the language, and really feel like part of the community.

Honestly, compared to the USA, it's just a completely different feeling.

  1. It is nice to be staged without beauty.
Unlike the Swiss, I had the impression that the Austrians do not see the Alps – apart from perhaps Kitzbühel or Zell am See – as a luxury brand. They see it as their home.

For me, Austria had:

Beauty at Swiss level

Bavarian warmth

Slovenian Serenity

German efficiency

Authentic culture

Authentic people. A place I absolutely want to visit on my next trip is Lake Wörthersee! Or Spielberg for the Austrian Grand Prix.

I love Austria.
