to what extent do tongue piercings damage teeth?

essentially what the title says. i'm interested in getting a tongue piercing but am worried about damage to my teeth enamel and gums. the piercing that was recommended to me is said to do it the "old" way so the piercing will not touch my teeth, but i am not so sure. i have always had very strong, healthy teeth (no cavities, no chips) but do not think this matters in this scenario.
