Breaking Into FP&A From a Coordinator Role
I’m looking for some guidance from people already working in FP&A or who successfully transitioned into it. I’m currently in a Treasury Coordinator role at a large, well-known company (F500). The work is valuable, but a lot of my day-to-day responsibilities lean administrative such as invoice processing, coordinating meetings, gathering documentation, supporting audits, and maintaining databases.
I’m 2.5 years now into my role after graduating a state school with a BSBA and I’m ready to do more “important” work rather than the more administrative work I feel like I’m doing. When I first started at the company, my boss had lead me to believe by this point in time he’d be looking to get me into an Analyst role but after having conversations with him it’s always “maybe next year we’ll see where you’re at” or “John might be retiring this year and a role will open” but they never leave.
I want to be intentional about building the skills and experience FP&A teams actually look for. For those who’ve made a similar transition:
• What should I focus on learning to become a strong internal candidate?
• Do you recommend any certifications or MBA to obtain that may help?
• Are there specific projects or responsibilities I should ask for?
• What helped you break through from support/operations into FP&A?
Any advice on positioning my current work or filling the right skill gaps would really help. Thanks!
