P.A.E.S.C.H — Episode 2: “Levels”

SERVICE CORRIDOR — LOWER LEVELS

Dajinn moves slowly through the dark hallway, holding the flashlight he managed to hotwire earlier. The beam is unexpectedly bright.. bright enough to cut across the long, silent corridor and reveal every speck of dust floating through the air.

The walls are streaked with old blood. Some of it looks smeared by hands. Some of it looks splattered.
There are deep scratches along the metal panels -claw marks far too wide to be human.

The smell is thick. Rot layered over chemicals.

Dajinn pulls his jacket sleeve tighter over his mouth and keeps walking.

DECONTAMINATION CHAMBER — RUINED

He steps into a large room that was once used for decontamination. Now it’s a graveyard.

Bodies lie in heaps. Some dried and shriveled. Some half-fused into the walls like the strain tried to absorb them into the structure. One figure is slumped against a broken sterilization tank, ribcage cracked open from the inside.

Dajinn freezes. His stomach tightens.
He forces himself to look anyway part wanting to understand, part needing to know what he’s up against.

On the walls, there are shaky notes written in red marker:

“THEY THINK.”
“THEY COPY.”
“NOT JUST ZOMBIES.”
“DON’T LET THEM LEARN YOU.”

He swallows hard and steps away.

UPPER HALL — STAIR ACCESS

He climbs the stairwell cautiously, the sound of each step echoing. His flashlight catches more weapons and supplies scattered near the upper landing dropped bags, untouched ammo, abandoned gear.

Dajinn hesitates, then takes everything he can reasonably carry:

  • A folding combat knife
  • A few energy bars
  • Two rifle magazines compatible with the gun he found
  • An old portable radio
  • A set of small tools
  • Batteries wrapped in tape
  • A cracked tablet device
  • A roll of duct tape
  • Plastic ties
  • A multipurpose survival lighter

He stops himself before taking too much. He’s getting greedy, and he knows it.

So he makes a decision.

VENT SYSTEM — DIY SAFE SPOTS

Dajinn climbs into the vents and starts building a system.

He hides items in different sections marking them with small taped symbols only he would recognize.

Some stashes are for ammo.
Some for food.
Some for tech he’s not ready to mess with yet.

He crawls deeper into a larger junction and begins turning it into a safe room:

  • A blanket from a locker
  • A water canteen
  • A small pile of rations
  • A corner for spare parts
  • A small lamp built from scavenged wires and broken LEDs
  • A piece of metal panel he can use to block the vent entrance if needed

It isn’t perfect.
But it’s safer than open hallways.

For the first time since waking up, he feels like he has control over something.

MAIN HALLWAY — MID LEVEL

Dajinn moves again, exploring the upper levels. The flashlight beam glides across blood trails, discarded gear, and scorch marks from explosives. At one point, he sees what looks like a handprint left by something much larger than a human hand long fingers, wide palm, deep indentations.

He keeps his pistol out now.

Halfway down a corridor, he hears movement. Soft. Fast.

He swings the light and catches the shape of an infected at the far end.

It sees him.
He fires one shot, then another.
The infected collapses with a violent jerk.

But the gunshot echoes too loudly.

Within seconds, more footsteps race toward him.

Dajinn ducks into a side hall and climbs into an open vent. He watches through the slats as several infected swarm the hallway, sniffing, twitching, searching.

Then he sees something different.

Something bigger.

A special infected limps in a towering, distorted figure with one arm thicker than the other, its mouth covered in hardened organic plates. It moves with slow intelligence, looking around methodically instead of blindly.

Dajinn holds his breath.

The creature tilts its head, listening.
It taps the wall with its huge hand, like checking for hollow space.
It almost finds him.

But a distant screech distracts it, and the group rushes away.

Dajinn doesn’t move for a full minute afterward. When he finally crawls down from the vent, his hands are shaking.

He understands now:

There are levels to these things.
Some are fast.
Some are strong.
Some… think.
Some learn.

And some use weapons.
He saw a dead infected earlier with a knife still clutched in its fingers. Now he knows it wasn’t an accident.

He’s in a hierarchy... one he doesn’t understand yet.

SUPERVISOR’S OFFICE — MID SECTOR

He enters a broken office and spreads the PH-SITE map across a desk. Dust falls off it like snow.

He studies every line, every stairwell, every sealed door.
There are multiple exits.. however most lead through areas marked:

“NO UNAUTHORIZED ENTRY.”
“RESTRICTED BIO-ZONE.”
“UNKNOWN ORGANIC OCCUPATION.”

One route might work.
It leads through an area labeled “SURFACE ACCESS B-3 — EMERGENCY EVAC.”

It’s risky.
The halls surrounding it are twisted, marked by strain growth on the map.

But it’s the only way up.

Dajinn kneels, tracing the route with his finger.
He takes a slow breath.

He’s not staying here.
Not in these halls.
Not in this maze full of monsters with a food chain of their own.

He’s getting out.

Somehow.

Above him, something heavy moves across the ceiling tiles slow, deliberate, aware.

The flashlight flickers once, then steadies.

Dajinn freezes, listening.
