Does it make sense for me to upgrade?

Hello, I do a bit of coding and I have a 2017 MacBook pro that is starting to show its age. I'm using it to work on projects and for my active job search currently but there is a bit of lag here and there which is bothering me. Since there are sales going on I was thinking I'd get a brand new one. But after I get a new job I don't think I will be using it as much, I will probably be using it for light projects at coffee shops sometimes and content consumption. Does it make sense to buy a new MacBook pro m5 (to keep for the next 7-10 years) or should I keep using the one I have and deal with the lag?
