Need advise for jumping into different lines of electrical work

I'm an apprentice electrician doing pretty much only new builds on town house sites and rarely get to see maintenance side of things so I feel like I'm only seeing a fraction of the trade but I'm also not sure if I want to do resi as a career. So when I get my licence how much are employers expecting you to know if you jump from residential to industrial/commercial? Is it a big learning curve and are businesses understanding that you'll have to learn a new line of work? How does that all happen?
