Safest route to coast from I5 in bad weather (in general)?
What tends to be the SAFEST way to the coast after a freeze? Dates unknown: winter. I have chains but would rather not use them, and if I recall, it's usually just patches of ice. The actual trip is Portland to Tillamook, but I'm willing to start from Salem or Corvallis (I have reasons to visit both) -- or even hit Astoria and travel south -- to avoid ice in the passes.
I'll check the roads first, obviously, but is there a generally accepted safest path? It's been too long since I've had to go in the winter. I'll have to leave on short notice but I can take my time when I do. I think Hwy 6 is a bad choice, generally. 30, 26, 22, 18... combos, then 101? Thank you.
