📖 Season Two — Chapter 7 The Vault Beneath Manhattan — Sierra’s Challenge

The elevator doors slid open onto the first floor of the Rocket Manhattan Operations Base. CJ, Caleigh, and Matt stepped out in full grunt uniforms—dark vests, caps lowered, badges clipped. Underneath the disguises, their Pokémon waited quietly. Charmeleon’s flame was dimmed to a faint ember. Pichu hid inside Caleigh’s bag. Mew hovered invisibly above them, its psychic pulse faint but steady.

Matt walked with the confidence of someone who knew Rocket’s halls far too well.

Matt: “Floor 1 is grunt country. Just act bored. These guys don’t pay attention.”

CJ nodded and followed his pace. Caleigh clung close behind, her eyes scanning the corridor.

A grunt walked past, yawning.

Grunt: “Shift change?”

Matt: “Yeah. Vault prep.”

The grunt waved them through.

The trio made it to the elevator. Matt used his forged ID.

BEEP — ACCESS GRANTED.

They stepped inside.

CJ: “Alright. Let’s find out what Rocket’s been hiding.”

The elevator dropped.

🟧 FLOOR 2 — THE ARROW TILE MAZE

As soon as the doors opened, CJ groaned.

The entire floor was a glowing labyrinth of directional arrow tiles, each one pointing in a different direction—right, left, up, down, diagonal, chaotic.

Caleigh’s jaw dropped.

Caleigh: “Oh great. A classic Rocket headache maze.”

Matt pointed at the patterns.

Matt: “You step on the tile in the arrow’s direction, it sends you flying—”

CJ stepped on an “↑” tile by accident.

WHOOSH—!!

He flew across the floor and smacked into a metal crate.

CJ: “…Bruh.”

Caleigh snorted—right before her foot hit a “→” tile.

Caleigh: “AAAAHHHH—!!”

She flew down the hallway like a ragdoll.

Matt stepped to help—

WHOOSH—!!

He shot backwards.

Matt: “I HATE THIS FLOOR.”

Charmeleon tried to help and became a fireball pinball bouncing around the room.

Pichu shot out of Caleigh’s bag screaming “Pichu-pichu-pichu—!!!”

Eventually, beaten up but alive, they reached a small metal platform in the back corner.

CJ: “I never want to see another arrow again.”

Caleigh pointed at a pedestal nearby.

Caleigh: “Guys… look.”

Inside a metal case were three Master Balls.

CJ blinked.

CJ: “They just leave these lying around?!”

Matt shrugged.

Matt: “Rocket has… questionable budgeting.”

Caleigh handed one to each.

Caleigh: “No arguments. We need these.”

They moved on.

⸝

⬛ B3 — RESTRICTED LEVEL

This floor was colder—lit by dim red lights and the hum of data servers.

Matt: “This is where Rocket stores its money trails. Donations. Land deals. Secret partners.”

CJ clenched his jaw.

CJ: “Maria Jones… she’s on these records.”

Caleigh checked a stolen tablet.

Caleigh: “She is. Her company was buying land around the boardwalk long before the Cyclones got involved.”

CJ’s heartbeat quickened. This was the link they needed.

A grunt nodded at them.

Grunt: “You three are on vault duty, yeah? Careful. Sierra’s on a warpath today.”

Matt stiffened.

Matt: “…Perfect.”

They continued to the vault override room. Matt hacked the panel.

ACCESS DENIED — ADMIN OVERRIDE ACTIVE

CJ frowned.

CJ: “Admin override… that means someone knows we’re here.”

Footsteps echoed behind them.

A cold voice sliced through the dark.

“I do.”

⸝

⬛ B4 — THE VAULT LEVEL

The elevator opened to the deepest floor.

Red lights pulsed like a heartbeat. Pipes hummed in the walls. A giant vault door loomed ahead.

On a pedestal sat the Lift Key.

CJ grabbed it.

And then—

BOOM.

Smoke burst across the hall.

From within it— tall, slim, deadly— Sierra, Rocket Admin, emerged.

Two Rocket grunts marched beside her, standing firm.

Her purple eyes burned with disgust and amusement mixed together.

Sierra: “Well… look what decided to crawl into my vault.”

Matt stepped forward, fists tight.

Matt: “Sierra.”

Sierra: “Still alive. Still a disappointment.”

CJ stepped beside him.

CJ: “We’re here for the data.”

Sierra twirled a black encrypted drive between her fingers.

Her voice shifted darker.

Sierra: “Let’s be very clear.” “Giovanni does not want the truth getting out.” “He sent me to stop you.” “And the only way you leave this base alive—” “…is if you beat us.”

She snapped her fingers.

GRUNT #1: “Orders received.”

GRUNT #2: “We’ll crush them.”

Sierra reached for a small red panel hidden in the wall.

Sierra: “And since you three want a challenge…”

She slammed the button.

KRRRR—CHHHHH—RUMBLE—RUMBLE—

The floor shook violently. Steel plates parted. Hidden machinery roared to life.

An entire Rocket Battle Stadium rose from beneath the dungeon—an arena ringed with metal bleachers, energy barriers, and glowing hazard zones.

CJ’s eyes widened.

CJ: “You guys seriously built a stadium under Manhattan?!”

Sierra: “We prepare for everything.”

She pointed sharply at Matt.

Sierra: “And YOU… Matt Willow.” “A pathetic excuse of a trainee.” “You never even bothered looking for your precious shiny Squirtle.”

Matt staggered—like she’d punched him in the chest.

Matt: “I DID look for him! He disappeared—what else was I supposed to—”

Sierra cut him off.

Sierra: “You never considered—” “That your Squirtle might have changed?”

Matt froze.

Matt: “…Changed how? What happened?”

Sierra smiled… slow… cruel.

Sierra: “Maybe he didn’t stay a Squirtle.”

Matt’s eyes widened.

CJ stepped forward.

CJ: “Sierra—enough games.”

Sierra raised her arms theatrically.

Sierra: “Then let’s battle.”

The lights around the stadium flared on.

Mew appeared behind CJ, blue aura burning.

Charmeleon roared. Pichu crackled. Slaking thumped its fists. Swampert stomped forward.

The two Rocket grunts stepped into place beside Sierra.

Sierra: “Rocket Stadium… ENGAGE!”

CJ: “Everyone together—NOW!” • Charmeleon: Dragon Rage! • Pichu: Thunder! • Slaking: Hammer Arm! • Swampert: Waterfall! • Mew: PSYCHIC BURST!

All strikes collided—

The explosion rocked the stadium.

When the smoke cleared—

Lapras collapsed. KO.

Sierra stared at the fainted Pokémon… stunned.

Then she smiled.

Sierra: “…Impressive.”

She tossed the encrypted drive toward CJ.

Sierra: “Take it. You earned it.”

Her finger hovered over a final switch.

Sierra: “But let’s see if you survive… this.”

She pressed it.

And the world fell into chaos.
