Wrestling with the Rosary

I just recently started dedicating more time to praying the Rosary. It’s starting to really open up to me, and I’m making honest efforts to stay consistent and learn more also. Just a few things I’m getting a little hung up one though.

First - meditating on the mysteries. I understand why and how. It doesn’t feel right me saying a Hail Mary prayer while my mind is meditating on something else. Taking my mind away from the prayer makes the prayer feel like I’m mindlessly reciting it. And vice versa. If I want to put all of my mind and heart into the prayer, I can’t also meditate on the mystery. I believe that prayer should be done with all of your attention, intention, heart, feeling, everything. Otherwise you’re repeating a prayer repetitively in vain, which I know the Bible advises against. To me, it feels best to meditate on the mystery before the Hail Mary’s, but this only allows for a small window to meditate on each mystery which I know defeats a lot of the purpose of the Rosary.

Also, the mysteries themselves. This I understand is more of a problem with me just being so green with this. But some of the mysteries… I don’t know what to get from them. Like Mary’s visitation to Elizabeth or Mary presenting Jesus as a baby. I don’t understand the significance of these mysteries that warrant deep meditation. Again, I understand there must be deep meaning to these, and I’m likely must missing the point. What do I do here though? Even the nativity, I understand it was a significant moment but I don’t know what there is to meditate on. Now the sorrowful mysteries, these all hit home for me. I have strong moments that show the strength and love from Jesus that I can really meditate on. Is there maybe a good book that gets deeper into meditations on each mystery?

Thank you in advance!
