I really miss filler TV episodes

Back in the day, filler episodes were annoying. For those who don’t know, TV show runners et al back in the day signed deals requiring a set number of episodes, and it was normal for seasons to be 25+ episodes long. Some of the more serialized shows went into the high 30s and 40s.

The show runners had to release additional episodes to meet contract requirements, and a lot of times they did not further the plot or just showcased generally pointless plot lines.

These episodes were known as fillers.

Once an established norm to have extended seasons, we are now humbled to have a 12 episode season. It eve seems recent shows are only airing 8 episodes before calling it a wrap for the season.

Yes, the quality of television has increased tremendously. Shows like Severance and Pluribus are fantastic; The Chair Company, The Curse; I could go on. However, people don’t have as many “veg out” type shows anymore, and while it seems we are waiting longer than ever between seasons, it is somewhat of a letdown when it only offers eight episodes.

It makes sense why back-media catalogs are so valuable. There was just more to take in and enjoy, and they keep people in front of the tube for longer periods of time.

Just a random thought. This post is meant to be lighthearted. Let’s keep the vibe going.
