It's time to talk about tenant unions
Correct me if I'm wrong but I haven't seen any posts on here about tenant unions. Tenant unions are fighting for safe, dignified, truly affordable housing for all. I remember seeing a post on here of a political cartoon from the 1900's showing a worker squeezed between low wages and high rent. And things haven't changed. Unions are more favorable now than they have been in decades and in 2019 Kansas City started their tenants union. They are now 10k members strong. Many fights are being won across the States by tenant unions to improve people's material conditions and effectively train leadership, like nothing I've ever seen, so people can stand up and fight for themselves and their neighbors. Don't get me wrong, we need more workplace unions in the States because our worker protections are minimal of they exist at all but we should also be working to expand tenant unions.
In Bozeman, MT tenants just won a huge victory with Tenants Right to Counsel, meaning that tenants facing eviction will get access to a lawyer and tenants who believe they're under threat of losing their housing can get access to a preemptive mediation with a lawyer. I can show you the studies that have data for how this helps residents of the communities that have access to this right but I'm going out to celebrate so I very likely won't be active for the rest of the night.
If there is a chance to improve our livelihood, I believe it exists with the Tenant Union.
