Long distance boyfriend (33M) offered to cover half my (24F) rent. Accepting help or inviting complications?
Is it a terrible idea to let him pay half my rent? Writing this at 1:30AM, beware of mistakes.
Seeing someone (33M), for a while now. It’s a long-distance thing. He lives in Sweden and I'm here in London.
I have to move out of my family home soon (family immigrating), and finding a decent flat here is a nightmare. I haven’t even finished my studies yet, let alone started a proper career, so my finances are a joke.
BF knows all this. He's stable and successful. He just laid it out that he wants to pay half the rent on a good place. He says it’s strictly to "help me" have a stable base, nothing more. And I am so tempted. It would literally change my life, I could focus on my studies instead of constantly calculating rent money. But a massive part of me is panicking.
The thing is, right now, when he visits, he stays in hotels near his work. If he pays half my rent, that stops. He’ll be staying with me instead. That feels like a very big thing, even if he's only here a few days a month. I had this conversation with him last night, right before he left. Obviously expressed how fast it felt, (despite knowing him for three years, we weren’t really romantically involved until this year).
He said, he sees me struggling, he’s not asking me to marry him, he just wants to help, it is not complex.
Buttttt… I don’t think I properly articulated the real fear. He dropped it eventually, but it lowkey got brought up in bed and I probably kinda let on that I was in (high on oxytocin).
Seriously considering it though because as things go on I don’t know how I’d be able to afford rent in London and staying in a room working overtime seems stressful to say the least. If the flat is in my name, is this the worst idea?
