Stranger found lost iPhone. We met and they gave it back to me. Hours later they texted asking for compensation

My husband was at an event last week and didn’t realize his phone fell out of his pocket at the end of the night. He remotely set it to Lost Mode so the lock screen says “This iPhone is lost. Please call (my phone number) if you find it.” My husband made a claim with the event center, and they said they’ll email him if they find it. One week later (yesterday) a stranger called me saying he works at the event center and found our phone, but he didn’t turn it into the lost and found. He kept it on his person and contacted us directly. Okay cool!

Today I drove 1.5 hours to the stadium to meet the man who found it and he returned the phone to me. All was good, expressed gratitude and we went our separate ways. It’s been 4 hours, and he man texted me asking for compensation. He said he thought I would have compensated him. I really can’t afford to give any money away right now. It’s the beginning of the month and I just paid rent/money is very tight. I feel a bit cornered and don’t know how to respond.
