My girlfriend (22F) is generally bad at comforting me (23F), and doesn’t know how to handle emotional situations, which often leaves me feeling angry, or invalidated in my feelings. How do I seriously breach the topic to her without hurting her feelings?
For context, we’ve been dating for around 3 months now, after being best friends for about 8 years. In all honesty, I don’t want to put too much pressure on our relationship as we’re still a new couple, and i know that I can oftentimes let my harsh emotions get the best of me.
I’m reality, It was only recently that I began to notice that she always replies with short answers to my complaints; oftentimes my long paragraphs to her only getting a single “that sucks, I love you“ in response. Usually, I ignore how short her answers are, and try to look on the bright side. But, this slowly led to me bottling up all my harbored feelings- until I finally screamed at her today.
Long story short, I visited my optometrist this morning, and was told that I would have to start wearing a prescription 24/7. I freaked out at the prices of a yearly plan of contacts alongside a pair of glasses, but ultimately went along with it. That is, until I got home, where the dam broke. I cried for hours, simply over the fact that it had come out of the blue for me, and I wasn’t ready for that kind of commitment. So, I contacted my girlfriend for comfort, explained the situation to her… And her response was to say, “you’re just going to have to stick it out, there’s not much you can do. <3”
-As I was currently crying a puddle, this response angered me, as they were the same thoughts I’d already had revolving around my head for the past few hours, and I lashed out at her.
To be completely honest, I’m embarrassed over the entire incident. In the future, I 100% don’t want to lash out at her over such silly things, and am wondering how to move on; or if there’s a way to talk about my feelings towards this in a healthy, safe way?
