I went back to the school anyway.. Big Mistake!

A couple of weeks ago I made a post about an incident that happened while subbing for an 8th grade class. A student asked to use the classroom phone to call her mother, and I allowed it. She ended up getting upset, yelled at me in front of the class, and then told staff that I snatched the phone out of her hand and hit her hand or something along those lines. Nothing came of it, but I said I’d never sub at that school again and that next time a student wanted to make a call I’d just send them to the office and let the office staff deal with it!

Well today the only open assignment happened to be at that same school, so I took it. And of course it happened again! A student got upset because she didn’t understand the assignment and demanded that I help her. I had already gone over the instructions 3 times with the class. I asked her which question she needed help with, and she said everything. I asked if she had read the packet (they were supposed to read a 2 page story before answering the questions), and she hadn’t….. So then she kept yelling across the room, “Can you help me?” even while I was helping other students who were actually raising their hands and telling me exactly what they needed help with.

Then she said, “Oh, so you’ll help them but not me.” Next she asked if she could use the phone to call her mother. I told her sure, I’d give her a pass to the office and she could make the call there. Suddenly she didn’t need to make the call, and another student said, “They won’t let her use the phone in the office.” So the office won’t allow it, but they expect a sub to allow it?? Crazy. I really think it’s just this school, because I’ve subbed at plenty of others and I’ve never run into this much fuss, drama, and attitude from students.
