How did Max and El go on a shopping spree in season 3

Its been hinted at that max's family is kind of poor, and I doubt Hopper was giving El a weekly allowance. SO how the hell were they able to go on that mall shopping spree in season 3. Don't get me wrong, it was very cute and I loved the whole material girl edit but how???
