How late did you stay during your first year of teaching?

I just started teaching on Monday and I’m exhausted. My commute is 45 minutes, so I wake up at 5:15 to be out of the door by 6, and then every day this week I’ve been staying insanely late. The teacher who was in my room before me left the room literally trashed… like broken furniture, trash all over the floor, cabinets stuffed with papers that are 5+ years old, etc. I have 4 globes in my room and 3 of them are outdated!

Each day, someone comes by just to check in and let me know I’m the last one in the building. I don’t want to be, but there is so much to do. I wasn’t given any lesson plans for the first few days so I’ve been doing my best, but I’m so tired. So far this week, the earliest I’ve left is 6:30. I know that isn’t good, especially with my commute, but I don’t know how to find a good balance. How do I get things done but not sacrifice my own time?
