Asked my boyfriend of 2.5 yrs to be more mature → he said ‘I can’t give you what you want.’ Am I insane?

I (F23) confronted my boyfriend (M21) about something small but important:

When we travel or spend time together, he constantly says things like “I’ll be so broke after this trip,(on a trip we do 50/50)” “I borrowed money to visit you why aren’t you happier,” “you should be my sugar mommy haha”, whipping out his bank app and telling me how much money he has left after paying for dates etc. I mean, even I would not do that, that is embarrassing. He is extremely affectionate but our sense of responsibility and maturity was just not resonating.

I told him it stresses me out and makes me feel like I’m responsible for him and that I wished he’d handle those things privately, because I keep those things very private and don’t whine about it. I was not asking for material stuff, just the same level of maturity as myself.

Instead of talking it through because these are fixable idk by next week, he said:

“I can’t give you what you want. I think I was doing my best”

He shut down emotionally and I gave up on him. Is this genuinely too much to ask of a partner?
