Flight/hotel booked (Dolomites, Feb/Mar '26)... should I rent skis?

Hope everyone is looking forward to a wonderful ski season!

Thanks to the community's advice, my wife and I finally booked our first Euro ski trip to the Dolomites next late Feb/Mar (staying at a lovely place a few km outside of Ortesei) - woohoo!

Now for the question of what to do about our skis/snowboard... after considering the following,

  1. We're flying budget airlines (Canada -> Munich -> Dolomites -> Milan -> Canada) so between my wife and i we're entitled to 2x carry-on (8 kg each) and 2x check-in (23 kg each)

  2. Airline said so long as the L + W + H of our check-in luggage does not exceed 158 cm they will count it as a regular piece of check-in luggage (otherwise I'll have to pay an extra $100+ each piece of luggage each way to check it as a "sports" luggage); however this only applies to max 1 pair of skis OR 1 snowboard per piece of luggage, so I can't pack both my skis and her snowboard together, and if we each use up our 1 check-in luggage allowance for sports equipment we'd have no more room for clothes etc. Also I think my skis alone will exceed 158 cm.

  3. Finally we will not be renting a car on this trip. i.e. we'll be staying at a place outside of Ortesei so we hope to rely on hotel shuttles to town centre and then bussing back (runs every 1/2 hr).

Based on the above we're planning on bringing my wife's board as regular check-in, but leaving my skis at home, which leads me to more questions...

  1. Does anyone know good places to rent skis in Ortesei? Just wondering any recommendations (locations, prices, models) wise, if there are any quirky European ski equipment rules/etiquettes I should learn as a non-European renting for the first time.

  2. Should I also bring my ski boots (stuff them into my regular check-in), or don't boother and just rent boots as well?

  3. I heard that you can additionally rent a locker in town (presumably from the same place where you rent your skis) and you can lock your skis/boots up overnight... that way you can commute to/from hotel to centertown in more comfortable footwear and then check into snow boots/skis once in town and shortly before boarding cable cars.. any experience with this?

Thanks
