duffel bag for carry on?

I bought a duffel bag a couple of weeks ago for an upcoming trip, but now I am getting paranoid. It fits within the size range of a carry on, but I have only ever taken hard shell luggage as a carry on and I am worried that there will be some issue with the bag. Are duffel bags allowed as carry ons?
