When/if to accept them back?
My sibling has been an intensely bad alcoholic for decades and has done a lot of terrible things and hurt a lot of people. This last relapse lasted a long time (my mother is an enabler and fully funds it so it never ends) and when I tried to go to their house to do a wellness check and encourage them to rehab (I know!) I was strangled and it was extremely scary and a big wake up call for me. I told them they would be out of my life until they went to and completed a treatment plan and stabilized. And that we needed to get therapy and he needed to be honest with the therapist (he lies) and work on his issues, which extend beyond alcoholism. Almost a year later, he has checked himself into rehab and told me he’s going to do the recommended steps (before he would detox 1-2 days, get out “do it on his own” aka drink lightly and lie). Everyone wants to celebrate and spend time together and he wants back in my life. He’s been sober like a week. No one is taking the strangling seriously in my family. And my mom (enabler) is trying to gaslight and pressure me into just forgetting about it. At one point she said “he placed his hands around my neck” and I was over reacting. Am I in the wrong for not wanting to just take him back as a friend even though he’s gone to treatment? I am proud of him but he’s also upended my life the past two years with constant relapses and he strangled me, which is a BIG DEAL and I’m upset my other family members don’t seem to care about it. I feel like if I allow it to happen once and forgive him easily, it can happen again. I want to wait and see that he’s stuck with the program and gotten back on his feet and is safe to be around…I don’t necessarily want to be part of his life during the recovery. He has also said he doesn’t think he can recover without me (we were best friends). And I’m afraid that if I never wanted to be close again, he would give up on being better or kill himself.
Thanks for reading/listening. I’m not sure what to do. I have communicated with him briefly over text but not been overly friendly and refused to chat or meet/spend time in person. It’s even more awkward because I live with family and they can’t have him over when I’m here and sometimes aren’t super respectful of my wishes to keep distance.
