Café Aroma?

I had the weirdest thing happen last week and for some reason I’m still thinking about it. Café Aroma is on Wall St next to the luggage store. I was walking around taking photos of the buildings for a little project I’m doing, comparing them with historic photos from the public library. I decided to go into the café and get a cup of coffee. I’ve been in there maybe 3-4 times in the past, all pre-Covid, and the owner was nice enough. Not deep conversations but he was friendly and told me he was from Greece.

So I went inside and he was behind the counter with his back to me, doing something. There was one other customer up at the front of the store by the window, reading a newspaper. I stood at the counter for a second, and the owner turned around and saw me. He didn’t say anything, just went back to whatever he was doing. Then someone came in the back door with a box and handed it to him. They started speaking Greek to each other, which I don’t understand, but the new guy gestured to me and clearly said something like, “you have a customer here.” The café owner waved at me dismissively, like “nah.” The guy seemed a little surprised by that. Finally I just slowly walked out of the store. It was so awkward. Why completely ignore a customer like that? It felt personal, but maybe I’m too sensitive.

Has anyone else had a weird experience here?
