Am I wrong for saying my parents shouldn’t pay for college for my sisters because they didn’t for me?
I am 24 f, my sisters are 14f. My mom always made it clear there were college funds for all of us. I got a full scholarship to go to school, and had to take out some loans to cover my housing. I asked about the money that was saved before taking out the loans, my mom said she had to spend it all on our survival. It was upsetting, but I understood.
Covid was early in my college experience . It completely destroyed college for me. I lost both my jobs, my campus housing, and then I failed my classes because they were online. I then lost the scholarship because my GPA dropped down too far.
Flash forward to now, I am trying to go back to school. I am now unable to get financial aid nor able to pay for school at all (a whole separate issue). I recently found out my parents have enough in both of my sister’s college funds to pay for 4 years at a small school. 4 years each. I’m mad. Why spend the money from the oldest kid’s account and not the younger ones? I am ten years older. I obviously would be attending first.
I told my parents about the problems im having and how that money would really come in handy. I feel it’s only fair I get enough of my sisters’ college money to finish my degree. I already did three semesters so I don’t even need four full years paid for. My parents disagree with me, that it’s their money and they decide how it is spent. Which I agree but I feel like I got screwed. I also pointed out how one sister is adamant on going to the military and it won’t be spent anyways. If she does decide she wants to go to college, the military will pay for it. My parents say they will give it to her for a down payment on a house. When I bought my house I got nothing. No financial help. I was on my own.
I don’t know if this is like something I should genuinely be upset about, or if this is just getting to me because of how different my sisters are treated than I was at their age. I wasn’t a bad kid or a trouble maker. But my addict dad got clean once I moved out. So they have the sober present dad I never had. They also get a lot of name brand things and get to go on all these trips and stuff. We had none of that when I was growing up. My mom keeps saying this is “the brokest they have ever been” but yet are able to provide double of all the things I never even had one of. I of course want my sisters to have nice things and not go without like I did, but it’s painful to see them have a “real family” and everything they ask for and I’m just off by myself with memories of nothing but trauma.
