AITAH (60F) longtime married no kids & can’t stand it anymore
I got through Thanksgiving but dread Christmastime. My entire family dynamic is one-sided.
I love my nieces and nephews and wouldn’t hurt their feelings for the world but jeez. I can’t anymore.
My in-laws only talk about their kids. I can’t take it anymore. Everyone sits around the table waiting for them to finish talking about nothing and the parents brag on and on about their kids. It is good to do that to an extent but it is to the exclusion of everyone else.
Do all aunts and uncles hang on every syllable of their nieces and nephews for hours on end? I want to talk to my adult family too. Am I the only one suffering through a 4th grader obviously lying in his story once again while everyone applauds him or her?
The last year I’ve slightly pulled back from them b/c I noticed the relationships were one sided.
I was asked to host and organize most of the family events. I got birthday and Christmas lists sent to me, I was invited to all the kid’s milestones but not the adult ones.
This year I reached out several times to some of them only to be ghosted or put off with the vague- “yes let’s get a coffee soon”. But babysitting, dog sitting, helping with setting up events or doing the planning and hosting it’s on me. I love that stuff.
So I ghosted a text from someone who ignored mine, I sent the same bday text I got instead of a call and gift. I haven’t reached out.
And guess what? Radio silence. They really don’t care. Am I the annoying and desperate old Aunty? Am I selfishly transactional?
I love my nieces and nephews but I really want to back off most of the school plays, recitals and games - not all but most. Thank you for your feedback.
