Politics of the "performative male" (& pick-me girl too ig) trend
I'm sure everybody knows the performative male trend but just in case I'll define it clearly. A performative male is a man who reads feminist literature to get laid. he puts on this act, usually involving feminism, so that he can get attention from women (someone correct me if I'm wrong). now that the trend is more popular, there are "performative male" stereotypes like drinking matcha, listening to clairo, reading sylvia plath.
When I first saw these jokes a few years ago (the casual feminism + "I'm 6'2 btw" jokes), i thought they were really funny & drawing to attention the bullshit of men. because of course the performative male isn't just a joke, just like any form of humor (guys im fun at parties i swear). probably you already know this but I'm going to state it anyway because i heard it laid out recently and now a lot of things make sense: humor (esp. dark humor) is inherently "political". it creates an in-group & an out-group. & at first the performative male was women shitting on men which is good. but now it's turned more into people shitting on feminists??? but i'm not sure if anyone else sees it that way so i wanted to ask.
While we're here, VERY late to the trend but the pick-me girl trend definitely shifted to a hatred of women imo. I think the original concept was talking about women who put down women to get male attention (kind of similar to performative males), but mostly hating those women. The hatred always confused me because (this is def plagarizing from a tumblr post but i can't find it anymore!) "i'm not like the other girls" is basically just "i don't want you to treat me the way you treat other women". & that makes me sad. Anyway this is probably old news but soon the pick-me girl trend turned into "fuck all girls who don't wear makeup/embrace femininity/do sports???" & anyone who complained was just putting down other women. lmk if any of you have a different analysis of this!!! also i'm pretty sure this has been done already so lmk if i should take it down.
