At a crossroads and lost. 34y
Hi everyone, sorry for what will be a long post but I'm feeling very lost in my career and life and wanted to ask for any advice from you folks that might have been in a similar spot.
I previously worked in a role that was involved in bringing in new business, servicing existing accounts and managing sponsorships and partnerships for an industry agnostic business association. It was a very social role with a lot of meetings, drinks, networking etc. with C-suite, Director-grade and very senior corporate executives. It was great fun, and I was very close with the team. My old boss and I were close and I am still in contact with her.
The problem was after 6 years there was no upward mobility and it had become very stagnant. It was more or less the same thing over and over again with no more room for growth.
Towards the end of my tenure a friend of mine reached out as they were hiring for a sales role in a brand new unrelated industry. I thought I should give this a shot as they were willing to take a chance on someone without the industry background.
Turns out when I get in there it was a toxic hell hole, from the culture, the day-to-day, the management etc. I ended up leaving there very shortly afterwards.
I am now at a media company selling sponsorship opportunities to a market overseas. My day-to-day now is literally sending out hundreds of cold emails and cold calling companies in this other country to try and sell our products. Nevertheless, the response rate is abysmal. I receive more out-of-office emails and non-delivered emails than I do actual humans replying me.
I'm not completely lost on what I should do. I spent the last 6 years building this network and relationship-building skills for it all to irrelevant in this job. I don't have any direct industry skills or knowledge and my local language ability also is a barrier. This current role I feel like could be accomplished by an intern or worse AI and I have no idea what is the point.
Has anyone been in a similar situation at all? Did you restart your career at the age of 34? Any advice on how I should approach things moving forward?
