Customer trying to get mail for person not listed on mailbox with no Photo ID
I have a customer who had a mailbox with us for years now. Since the Post Office has started the new rules to make sure we are updated all customers. We have cleaned up the names listed on the mailboxes. Getting ID's and Proof of address docs.
One customer I saw a letter for someone that wasn't listed on her mailbox. I took the letter out to return to sender. We scan and email all the letters. The customer saw the letter emailed to her. Then she didn't see it in her mailbox. I told her we don't have a ID for this person. We also don't have a proof of address doc or PS1583.
The customer told me its her sister who sick and she taking care of here. Saying some mail has both her name and her sister's name. Some might just have her sister's name only. I told her that we need her sister's ID, POA, and sign a PS1583. She tells me she doesn't leave the house. Brings me a ID that was from 2003.
Then starts getting mad and yelling at me. I told her the laws and rules. She then comes back next day saying my mailman delivers mail to me for someone not at this address. I told her the Post Office may go by the address only unless your Post man knows who lives there. I also said we aren't the Post Office not for sure. We have to go by person's names and if we have a signed PS1583 form with doc's for proof.
This customer had identity theft from her mailbox. You think she would understand why we have to do this. She tells me you know me. My reply to this. Yes I know YOU not this other person that has a different last name then you. I tell her she can go to the Post Office and talk to them see what they will do. She asked me if I could talk to them. I told her you should since you can give them all the information.
She comes in again asking me the same questions. Telling me the same thing. I tell her I went to the Post Office and asked them about it. The Post Office said No ID no mail. Or she can get Power of Attorney. She asked me how much is it for Power of Attorney. I say I don't know know. She tell said don't you do Power of Attorney here? I tell her I'm not a Attorney I don't know. We use to have a Attorney rent our meeting room years ago. I then look it up how much would it cost. Online said $200 to 1000 or more. She then gets made asking me if there anything I can do?
I told me customer 4 times the same thing. I feel as she thinks something is going to change. I told her she can send the mail to her house for her sister. So she doesn't have to worry about getting ID information. She wont do it.
I also tell her that she should take any mail that she gets at her house that isn't hers. To write on it this person not at this address. Give it to the Post Office or her Post Man. I asked has she done this? She tells me no.
You asking why you keep getting mail for someone that doesn't live at your address. How is the Post Office going to know if you don't tell them?
Fun fact depending on the type of mail. Their are data list of people's names and addresses. Those list don't always have the right information on them. It happens ever 6 months. A few customers will get mail address to a PMB for non profits. Say 5 customer who have mailboxes. But the mail from the non profits will go to 365, or 555 or 289. We have to return to sender and contact the companies to delete the information since its wrong. This is the best way to handle it.
I will also open it. If there a letter with return Postage I will put letter with the customers name on it. Write delete name. Mail it out. Not only does the Post Office get money for the postage on the return letter. Then the company gets charged and gets the letter asking them to delete the name. This way the business gets charged $0.65 or more or less for each letter.
