Was my professor being a bigot?
So I (19 NB) attend a liberal arts college and our college policies advocate for inclusion etc. So there is this English professor who is considered to be the most open minded professor of all. He constantly uses terms like cisgender, queer and even defended polyamour. But just two days ago during lecture he was talking about "Why he is an atheist , how religion is black and white and how most religions criminalize homosexuality." Now all this is fine and good, but what he said next is the problem. He suddenly went on a veer and said ,"Sex matters, that is why its same sex attraction. It can never be same gender attraction. Sex is a biological reality. Trans women cannot date lesbians or be lesbian." I was floored. I immediately went, "No sir, there are many trans women who are lesbians and do date other lesbians. That doesn't invalidate their sexuality. Because they are women. " and then he instantly goes, "Sex and gender are different. Can someone tell me the difference" and I instantly raised my hand. He suddenly went, "I had a friend who changed his sex and became a woman." And I loudly said , "Please don't misgender your friend?" And he went on a long rant about "Words matter", "Language has evolved. I will never understand what you are going through. People should reach an understanding on their own, you cannot expect them to evolve so fast. You are asking people to evolve too fast. You can't educate , correct or condescend like this. I know you are more educated then me about this topic. All you can do is educate yourself more. You cannot change the world". Maybe I am a psy major and do not understand literature as well but what does that even mean? Was I doing something wrong? Should I have not called him out? Was I asking for too much?
