The forest was supposed to be quiet.

Your first real hunt—finally a chance to prove you could stand among the long line of creature hunters in your family. The target was a forest-dwelling drake, nothing too dangerous, nothing you hadn’t studied a hundred times in training.

But then the storm rolled in.

Thunder shattered the sky, rain drowning out every sound except your own heartbeat. You pushed deeper into the woods, trying to stay on the drake’s trail, but the storm had other plans. The mud slipped under your boots, branches snapped overhead, and shadows twisted in every direction.

You never saw the wolf until it was too late.

A flash of silver fur leaped through the rain—startled as much as you were. Instinct took over. Your blade came up, the wolf lunged, and pain exploded across your ribs as both of you hit the ground. A snarl, a yelp, darkness.

When you woke, you weren’t lying in the storm anymore.

You were inside a cave.

Wrapped in a rough layer of moss and leaves, the air was warm from a small fire built near the entrance—its crackling glow barely holding back the storm still raging outside. Your head spun as you pushed yourself up.

A soft sound made you freeze.

The wolf.

The same silver wolf you’d struck. It lay curled near the wall, wounded but awake, watching you with steady amber eyes. There was no magic glimmer, no strange aura, no sign of anything unusual.

Just a wolf.

A wolf that had dragged you out of the storm.

Its tail thumped weakly against the ground when it saw you look its way. Not threatening. Not fearful. Something in between.

You were supposed to be hunting a drake.

Not… this.

Not a creature you’d injured, only for it to save your life in return.

The storm roared outside, sealing you both inside the cave. And the wolf, breathing slow and shallow, didn’t take its eyes off you—waiting to see what you’d do next.
