Stop the Hate on Data Centers

Honestly I’m getting tired of people in Ohio acting like data centers are the worst thing ever, like suddenly everyone is pretending to be an expert on the grid because they saw one Facebook post. If someone hates a data center because “where are the jobs??” then they clearly don’t understand what these places actually do. A data center isn’t supposed to be a giant employer, it’s supposed to be the thing that keeps everything else working. We don’t scream at water plants for not hiring thousands of workers, because the main value is clean water. Same thing here. If you want hospitals to have working imaging systems, and your bank app to not freeze every time you need to pay rent, and schools to actually connect students to online classes, then yeah, you need a gigantic building full of servers even if it doesn’t look exciting from the outside. People can’t complain about slow apps and bad connectivity and then block the very thing that prevents those problems, like that is literally self-sabotage.

And I get people being mad about how the deals are made, because politicians give away way too many tax breaks for basically nothing, but that doesn’t mean the whole industry sucks. Data centers are already one of the only growing tech sectors Ohio actually beats other states in, but somehow we want to throw that away too. In like 10 years they brought billions of dollars of private investment here and created way more jobs across construction, utilities, logistics, suppliers, etc. than just the handful of folks who swipe their badges at the building. So this idea that “oh it’s only 100 jobs so who cares” is just wrong. And the part that annoys me is if Ohio pushes them out, those data centers will just move to Indiana or Texas or whatever and then we’ll still depend on those states for our cloud services, so we lose twice.

Also when people start yelling about “my bills will go up because Jeff Bezos wants more computers,” it shows that they have not actually read what the state is already doing. Regulators literally created a special rate that forces data centers to pay for most of the power they reserve plus long-term contracts, so the extra grid upgrades don’t dump costs on normal people. Same thing for water. Everyone freaks out and acts like we’re living in the desert, but modern centers in Ohio are already using closed-loop or totally water-free cooling because that’s how the climate here allows them to build. Some places are even reusing “waste” heat for public buildings and greenhouses, so that’s actually free heat for the community, but people would rather spread conspiracy theories.

So instead of screaming “ban data centers forever,” the real issue should be demanding better conditions like paying their full share of upgrades, community benefit agreements, heat reuse, and clawbacks if they don’t deliver. Because data centers are basically the backbone of our whole digital life, and pretending they’re optional is just dumb. People act like they hate them until the moment their hospital records don’t load during an emergency or their favorite app breaks, and then suddenly it’s the government’s fault. We can either be the place companies invest in or we can act like angry cavemen and push everything away and still end up paying for it.
