Allergy Q&A: Allergic reaction from regular polish pedicure?

Submit your question

Question:

I’ve had a suspected acrylate allergy for years (learned the hard way the dangers of at-home Amazon gel kits), thus leaving me to use press-ons and regular nail polish only. Two days ago, my mom and I went to the salon as a gift from another family member and did polish pedicures. We both insisted on polish instead of gel and the bottles we chose were indeed polish. I chose a berry red that my pedicurist had drying issues with during application. By the time I left, they were still tacky, and by the time we got to the restaurant for lunch, my big toe nails specifically were wrinkled and peeling off. I didn’t bother going back to have it fixed, because in my thinking, the experience as a whole was what was paid for (which was great- mimosas, atmosphere, really great and friendly service). I grabbed a similar Sally Hansen color from CVS and redid my polish when I got home, and honestly it looks fine to me. Since then, though, the cuticles of my toes are inflamed, itchy, burning (all typical reaction signs) and there’s even a spot near my knee where my tacky toe nails had touched skin when I sat criss-cross later that night before fixing them. My concern is whether I’m now having a reaction to regular nail polish. I’ve read up so much over the years about reactions and allergies and it seems that an allergy to regular polish is pretty irregular. I was originally suspecting that maybe the brush and acetone my pedicurist had used to clean up the edges of my nails was cross-contaminated, or that it was a weird reaction to the cuticle trimming she did. But the reaction spot higher near my knee is what is making me think it’s from the undried polish. Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated. I’ve never really had any sort of adverse reaction to polish before this. And the itching is horrific. Pretty worried I may not be able to even get a basic pedicure anymore lol.

Answer:

Hey there! Sounds like a pretty frustrating experience. It's definitely worrying when something that's usually safe suddenly causes discomfort.

Sometimes our body can react to stress or emotional triggers in unexpected ways. Psychosomatic aspects could play a role here if you were subconsciously nervous or stressed during your salon visit. It's not just about allergies; emotions and unresolved stress can show up as physical symptoms.

Maybe there's a personal conflict you're unaware of that was triggered during the visit. It might relate to feeling out of control due to past reactions, or renewing a worry about exposure to allergens.

Here are some questions you could reflect on:

  1. Did you feel anxious or uneasy during the salon visit, even if you couldn’t pinpoint why?

  2. Is there any past experience with allergies that you still feel emotionally charged about?

  3. Could the setting or company have triggered any unresolved stress or emotions?

  4. Was anything in your life causing stress around the time of the pedicure?

  5. Do you feel pressured or conflicted about beauty routines in general?

Stay hopeful! Sometimes exploring these emotional connections can be helpful. I'm here if you have more questions or need someone to chat with.
