concern about a parent
Hello, I'm a teacher and run my own small forest-school. It's an excellent place for the neurodivergent and we have several Aut-PDA kids. I'm writing out of concern for a parent who I believe is being bullied by her PDA son. She's devoted her life to his care, and explain that he needs "constant co-regulating". He's already rejected two schools, and although he likes mine, he's constantly demanding that the school be run exactly as he wants. (He's 7.) He hits kids and teachers, melts down over simple tasks, and is verbally rude most of the time. This is all to be expected, and I know how to handle it.
My concern is that he is already physically aggressive with his mother, and she only responds by distraction, or giving him what he wants. She says she will never "force" him to do anything he doesn't want to do.
I have gently explained that in my space, respect for authority and the wellbeing of others is expected, and that we are firm about consequences. This is in order to help him understand that the world is not going to be as accomodating as his parents are. There's no conflict over this with his parents, but their own ways are very different.
I'm genuinely afraid that this mother will find herself in a few short years with a kid who is stronger than her, uses physical aggresssion to get his way, and never wants to leave the house (because that's the only place he gets his need for control met.) I've seen this happen before and it resulted in a physically-abusive 25yo man with no education, no initiative, and no social skills living at home and controlling everyone in the household.
Is there a way to break this cycle before it's too late? What resources can help?
