Looking to take a pat leave, what do I need to know?

I teach grade 5 in Ontario and my wife and I are planning to start a family in 2026 or 2027. I never really thought about taking a leave before, but my partner can’t really take one in her position (she’s a family doctor). I’m asking to see what I should be looking into if I’m planning on taking some time off. I would prefer to take max 6 months off, but my wife would like me to take a year.

What am I able to take if my wife only takes maybe a month or two off? Does this affect my pension/ retirement date? Thanks!
