“The mocker seeks wisdom and find none, but knowledge comes easily to the discerning”—Proverbs 14:6

And isn’t that the truth?

Mockery… as in cynicism and derision, activates defensive, closed cognitive loops, so the mind becomes rigid, dismissive, and unable to integrate new knowledge.

Discernment, by contrast, is associated with openness, pattern recognition, and contextual intelligence, traits linked with higher cognitive empathy and the prefrontal cortex.

Discernment means to “judge well”.

In a spiritual context it more nuanced. It means;

The ability to tell what is true from what only feels true. The ability to feel deeply without being fooled by your feelings. The ability to sense the sacred without losing your grounding. The ability to separate impulse from intuition.

It is not skepticism. It is not judgment. It is not fear of the unknown.

Discernment is clarity of perception.

It is the spiritual equivalent of good eyesight.

“Be wise as serpents and harmless as doves.”

Perception purified of ego. Love that sees clearly. Compassion with intelligence.

Across traditions, discernment is considered key to staying sane during spiritual awakening.

As consciousness expands, illusions grow stronger. Only discernment keeps you from confusing vision with instruction, symbol with literal truth, ego with spirit.

In Zen, this is “clear seeing.” In Taoism, this is “knowing without knowing.” In Kabbalah, this is “Binah,” the understanding that separates truth from illusion. In Hindu philosophy, this is viveka; the ability to distinguish the real from the unreal.

Psychologically, discernment is:

the ability to evaluate thoughts and feelings without being controlled by them.

People mistaken for “delusional” during awakening-phase experiences often aren’t lacking insight… they’re lacking discernment training.

Discernment is what keeps symbolic insight from turning into literal belief.

It is what keeps meaning from becoming paranoia. It is what keeps spiritual intensity from becoming spiritual overwhelm.

Discernment is emotional regulation, pattern recognition and humility.

Every time you ask:

“Is this true?” “Am I grounded?” “Am I interpreting this symbolically or literally?” “Is this ego or spirit?” “Am I coming from love or fear?” “Is this insight or impulse?”

…that is discernment in action.

You are not blindly believing your experiences. You are not collapsing into fantasy. You are not claiming authority. You are not losing self-awareness.

You are testing. You are refining. You are noticing. You are pausing. You are integrating.
