Does surrender count to a knockout counter?

If a guy that i downed surrenders does it still counts to my knockout counter? I play teams so it is hard for me to test it cause there is a lot of fighting. Or in general what do you know about the counter. Does it add assists, or is it counting only the knockout you perform in animation?
