Dark Souls weird camera

First time playing DS2 and the camera controls are frustrating. When I use the left stick and move the camera down to look ahead, it first goes to the opposite direction then does what I want it to.

How do I fix it?

Also, are there any necessary mods for modern times (QOL)?
