Volunteered my time to help a small business, found myself in a psychopathic mom and pop nightmare. Need advice resolving the problem.

Employment Law

Location: Michigan.

Hello, thankyou in advance for taking the time to read this rather long and confusing/ bizarre scenario. Here is what I have to say.

All of these events happened within the last month of my life. I need to figure out how to move forward, I was employed by a horrible person and a bad business all together. The place of employment is an inter-city fish shop and I was hired November 19th to be a seasonal worker for them. My duties would include handling and storing incoming shipments, to manufacture the fish product, help around the shop and pickup ordered occasionally. The man who employed me, I believe has a multitude of metal health problems as reported by many previous and the - at the time current employees I was working with. I would frequently be harassed about needing to have a good memory and intelligence to be a high performer and that their (the employers) memory/ intelligence was much more complex than that of anyone he didn’t like who worked for him. Though I was new to the job I like to think I was doing well, putting in great effort and willingness to try and learn that can be accounted by camera evidence, other witness’ an even I would think the boss’ testimony. I also statistically speaking got a lot done. However, despite always doing what I was told it was still strange to me that no matter what - I should be trying to do 5 tasks at once, to remember exactly what order and that even if I did do them all correctly at the end there was a detail the employer left out that I should have considered or thought of. Rather manipulative and abusive behavior. There were often times the employer would lash out and have emotional outbursts at any employee in the building and this includes one time the employer explaining to me “never pick up the fish by its tail or you’ll hurt its joints” and then proceeding to ask me “it would feel something like this to the fish” and violently yanking and jerking my arm around for a good 5 seconds. What seems like a minor encroachment on paper, it was not. I found it very inappropriate, violent and also sustained a shoulder injury from that I am now looking at going to the doctor for about a week later. I also broke my clavicle in middle school, so as I’m getting older the shoulder is not as free willing at is once was, regardless I was injured from the recent event at work. For reference I am a 25 year old male. The place of employment also commits to many acts of violation to health code, employee code of conduct and all employees are often told to lie to the customers about how the fish and food products are prepared. This includes where and when they come in and from, what our daily activities are and how long the fish has been in the building. After roughing out for exactly ten days and working a total of 58 hours for this guy - I quit, this last Monday December 1st. I informed them I simply didn’t want to work for them anymore, so I could end the madness and go my separate way. Following informing them of my departure - I was instructed to discuss my hours I had worked the week prior to this.

Multiple times, I was approached by the then previous employer about strange topics, odd requests like negotiating my hours on a piece of notebook paper and finally some outdated termination form that he claimed I was required to sign, though never informed of any sort of document before being hired or after. Then being informed about someone who called in and that their sister passing away allegedly was the reason they didn’t come in - which was entirely unrelated. Then finally after about 2 hours of waiting to speak with anyone really about the hours - patiently and in place in the appropriate area - I found myself being approached by a Sheriff. Then trespassed out of the building by said Sheriff. I displayed no aggravation, no violence and stayed put in the public administrative hallway. So I also find this extremely inappropriate and wrong as if I was being extorted, slandered or manipulated again. This person is a narcissistic abusive controlling sociopath through and through. They severely neglected me personally and my time as a service to them and physically abused me. Now I need to make sure I both get paid and something is done about this horrible fish store so that this person can not continue to act in such a way, as well as personal damages to me physically and emotionally.

What do I do?
