Why your workouts stop ‘working’ in your late 30s/40s — and what actually helps
A lot of women we coach hit this point in their late 30s or 40s where the things that always worked—clean eating, cardio, pushing harder—just… stop working. It’s incredibly common, and it usually comes down to hormone and recovery changes that affect how your body responds to stress.
Here are the shifts that make the biggest difference:
1. A gentler, more strategic fasting + meal timing approach
Long fasting windows or under-eating can backfire when cortisol is already high. What works better for most women: a moderate fasting window, breaking the fast with protein + fiber, and spacing meals 3–4 hours apart to stabilize blood sugar and reduce cravings.
2. Strength training becomes essential
Muscle naturally declines during perimenopause. Less muscle = slower metabolism.
Most women see better results when they switch from tons of cardio to 3–4 days/week of strength training with basic compound movements and progressive overload.
3. Carbs aren’t the problem — timing is
More carbs around strength days, fewer on rest/HIIT days, and focusing on whole-food sources tends to help with energy, cravings, and belly fat.
4. Recovery matters more than intensity
Sleep, hydration, walking, and stress management often make a bigger difference than “working out harder.”
If you’re 35–50, have you noticed your old routine suddenly stop working? What changes helped (or what are you still struggling with)?
